Tony McGuirk

Tony has 40 years’ experience of risk and operational management and was CEO and Chief Fire Officer of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) - one of the most complex, emergency management organisations in the UK - for 15 years, providing integrated emergency services to a population of 2 million people. He has been a National Adviser on Emergency Management in the UK, and has extensive experience in dealing with crises, emergencies and disasters. He has worked within a range of strategic governance frameworks including compliance with relevant legislative responsibilities. He was awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal in 2006, and made a Commander of the British Empire in 2011. He has worked in North America, Canada, Europe and the UAE and in 2015 he moved to Australia having been awarded a Distinguished Talent Visa for his work in disaster and emergency response and management. He is a Fellow of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management, and a Fellow of the International Institution of Fire Engineers. As a Commander and National Adviser to the UK Government, Tony has exercised strategic command and leadership during the management of major emergencies and crises including multiple rescues, major evacuations, major floods, terrorism and civil disorder.
